Target Information
This gene encodes a homeobox-containing transcription factor that is homologous to the empty spiracles gene in Drosophila. In humans, EMX2 is expressed in the dorsal telencephalon, olfactory neuroepithelium, and urogenital system.
It shows a gradient expression in the developing telencephalon, possibly contributing to neocortical patterning. In the olfactory neuroepithelium, EMX2 forms complexes with eIF4E, potentially regulating mRNA transport or translation.
In the developing urogenital system, EMX2 is expressed in epithelial tissues and negatively regulated by HOXA10. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding distinct proteins.
