Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the hyaluronidase family. Hyaluronidases are endoglycosidase enzymes that degrade hyaluronan, a major glycosaminoglycan of the extracellular matrix. The regulated turnover of hyaluronan is critical for processes such as cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. The encoded protein may also play a role in sperm function. This gene is located in chromosome 3p21.3, a region associated with tumor suppression. Expression of specific transcript variants may indicate tumor status. Alternatively spliced variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed, some lacking hyaluronidase activity. This gene overlaps with and shares part of the first exon with N-acetyltransferase 6 (GCN5-related).
