Target Information
Mi (Microphthalmia transcription factor, MITF) is a basic helix-loop-helix-leucine zipper (b-HLH-ZIP) transcription factor involved in pigmentation, mast cell, and bone development.
Mutations in Mi cause Waardenburg Syndrome type II in humans. In mice, loss of pigmented cells in skin, eye, and inner ear leads to osteopetrosis and defects in natural killer and mast cells.
Two isoforms exist, differing by 66 amino acids at the N-terminus. Shorter forms are expressed in melanocytes (52 kDa and 56 kDa), while longer forms (60–70 kDa) are found in osteoclasts, B16 melanoma cells, mast cells, and heart.
