Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type 1 transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and certain epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Multiple isoforms exist, with CD44H being predominant in normal tissues.
It functions as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and mediates cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 plays roles in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression can be upregulated in some carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express high levels, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation.
The CD44 gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, producing functionally distinct isoforms. Dysfunction of CD44 is associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and may be related to tumor metastasis formation.
