TET1은 메틸시토신(5mC)에 특이적으로 결합하는 디옥시게나아제로, 5mC를 5-하이드록시메틸시토신(hmC)으로 전환시킵니다.
hmC는 염색질 구조 조절 및 특정 인자 모집에 관여하거나 시토신 탈메틸화의 중간체로 작용할 수 있습니다.
hmC는 배아줄기세포(ES cells)와 뇌, 특히 푸르킨예 뉴런에서 풍부하게 존재하며, 심장·폐·뇌의 태아 발달에 관여할 가능성이 있습니다.
