Target Information
ATP-dependent calcium pumps are responsible for maintaining low cytoplasmic free calcium concentrations. These pumps, located in intracellular organelles, belong to the sarcoplasmic or endoplasmic reticulum calcium (SERCA) ATPase family.
- SERCA1: Expressed exclusively in type II (fast) skeletal muscle
- SERCA2: Tissue-dependent processing produces SERCA2a (type I slow skeletal, cardiac, smooth muscle) and SERCA2b (ubiquitous isoform)
- SERCA3: Found in non-muscle cells, less characterized
