BAX는 Bcl-2 패밀리에 속하는 단백질로, 세포사멸(apoptosis)의 조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다. Bcl-2가 항-apoptotic 단백질로 알려진 반면, BAX는 pro-apoptotic 기능을 수행합니다. 세포사멸 조절은 BAX와 Bcl-2의 여러 아이소폼 간의 호모 및 헤테로이량체 형성을 통해 이루어집니다.
BAX 유전자는 Bax alpha (21 kDa) 및 Bax beta (24 kDa) 등의 아이소폼을 암호화하며, 두 아이소폼 모두 BH1, BH2, BH3 도메인을 포함합니다. Bax beta는 고유한 카복실 말단을 가지며, 소수성 막관통 도메인을 포함하지 않습니다.
Bcl-2 또한 여러 아이소폼으로 발현되며, Bcl-2 beta는 alpha형과 비교해 3' UTR 및 코딩 영역이 다릅니다.
BAX의 과발현은 세포사멸을 촉진하며, BCL-2 관련 단백질들과 호모다이머 또는 헤테로다이머를 형성할 수 있습니다.
