Target Information
Enteroviruses, such as enterovirus 71, belong to the picornavirus family (pico [small] + RNA [ribonucleic acid] + virus). Picornaviruses are among the smallest and simplest RNA-containing viruses known. The RNA of many enteroviruses has been cloned and fully sequenced, showing a similar length of about 7,400 nucleotides and identical organization. The human alimentary tract is the main site of enterovirus replication, and these viruses were first isolated from enteric specimens. They cause diseases such as paralytic poliomyelitis, aseptic meningitis-encephalitis, myocarditis, pleurodynia, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, conjunctivitis, and other syndromes affecting extra-intestinal organs. There are 67 known enterovirus types: three polioviruses, twenty-three coxsackieviruses A, six coxsackieviruses B, thirty-one echoviruses, and four other enteroviruses.
