Target Information
Desmin (approximately 53 kDa) exhibits a high degree of tissue specificity, predominantly expressed in all types of muscle cells (cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle). Its expression is regulated in a stage- and tissue-specific manner, being induced during terminal development of skeletal muscle differentiation.
In skeletal and cardiac muscle cells, desmin is localized in the Z-disk region and at the intercalated disk. Expression in smooth muscle is more heterogeneous. Coexpression of vimentin and desmin has been observed in tumors derived from muscle tissue, such as rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas.
During myocardial dysfunction, dramatic changes in desmin distribution have been reported.
