Target Information
The Calpain family of proteins are calcium-regulated thiol proteases with broad endopeptidase activity throughout the body. Calpain small subunit 2 (CSS2, CAPNS2) is a calcium-dependent protease expressed ubiquitously in the cytoplasm. It forms a heterodimer with a large subunit, catalyzing proteolysis of proteins involved in cytoskeletal remodeling and signal transduction. CSS2 also acts as a chaperone to the larger subunit, ensuring proper folding and conformation. Upon calcium binding, CSS2 dissociates from the complex, activating the large subunit and allowing translocation from cytoplasm to cell membrane. Defects in CSS2 gene expression can cause abnormal calpain activity and impaired fetal development.
