- Catalytic activity: Cleaves interstitial collagens in the triple helical domain.
- Cofactors: Binds 2 zinc ions and 3 calcium ions per subunit.
- Domain: The conserved cysteine in the cysteine-switch motif binds the catalytic zinc ion, inhibiting the enzyme until activation-peptide release.
- Enzyme regulation: Activation requires removal of the activation peptide.
- Function: Degrades fibrillar type I, II, and III collagens.
- Similarity: Belongs to the peptidase M10A family; contains 4 hemopexin-like domains.
- Tissue specificity: Expressed in neutrophils.
