Catalytic activity: Cleaves 14-Ala-|-Leu-15 and 16-Tyr-|-Leu-17 in the B chain of insulin.
Substrate specificity: No action on collagen types I, II, IV, V; cleaves gelatin chain α-2(I) > α-1(I).
Cofactors: Binds two calcium ions and two zinc ions per subunit.
Domain: The conserved cysteine in the cysteine-switch motif binds the catalytic zinc ion, inhibiting the enzyme until activation-peptide release.
Function: Degrades casein, gelatin types I–V, fibronectin; activates procollagenase.
Similarity: Belongs to the peptidase M10A family.
