Target Information
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that catalyzes the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions. It is abundant in mammalian tissues.
CA IX is highly inducible under hypoxia via HIF-1 alpha and serves as a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia.
By regulating hydrogen ion (H⁺) flux, carbonic anhydrases help maintain pH balance in normal tissues. Inhibition of CA IX can lead to increased cell death under hypoxic conditions.
