Target Information
This gene encodes a bitter taste receptor belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. It is specifically expressed by taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. The TAS2R5 gene is intronless and encodes a 7-transmembrane receptor protein that functions as a bitter taste receptor. It is clustered with other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and genetically linked to loci influencing bitter perception. TAS2R5 may play a role in sensing the chemical composition of gastrointestinal contents and mediates gustducin-linked signaling pathways, including PLC-beta-2 activation and TRPM5 gating. Expressed in gustducin-positive taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate.
