Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA, and their protein components vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found at 17p13.3.
