Target Information
Beta tubulins are one of two core protein families (alpha and beta tubulins) that dimerize to form microtubules. Beta-III tubulin is mainly expressed in neurons and may play roles in neurogenesis, axon guidance, and maintenance. Mutations in the beta-tubulin gene cause congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles type 3. Beta-III tubulin can also be found in Sertoli cells and transiently in non-neuronal embryonic tissues. Microtubules, composed of alpha and beta subunits (~55 kDa each), are essential for chromosome segregation, intracellular transport, and structural support. Because beta-tubulin is ubiquitously expressed in eukaryotic cells, it is commonly used as a loading control in protein detection assays such as Western blotting.
