Target Information
BST2 (also known as CD317, HM1.24 antigen, DAMP-2, tetherin) is an integral membrane protein involved in B-cell development and growth. Expression of BST2 on fibroblast cell lines supports stromal cell-dependent growth of pre-B-cell lines. BST2 is expressed throughout B-cell maturation, as well as in T-cells, monocytes, NK cells, dendritic cells, and myeloma cells.
Research indicates BST2 inhibits retrovirus release from human cells, a process counteracted by the HIV-1 Vpu protein. BST2 retains virions on cell surfaces or internalizes them into BST2-positive compartments. Depletion of BST2 abolishes the requirement for Vpu, suggesting potential therapeutic implications for HIV/AIDS. BST2 dysfunction has also been associated with stomatitis.
