Calpain 1 (CAPN1)는 칼슘에 의해 활성화되는 중성 시스테인 프로테아제로, 비리소좀성 세포내 단백질 분해 효소입니다. 포유류 칼페인은 다양한 조직 특이성을 가지며, 일반형, 위 특이형, 근육 특이형이 존재합니다. 일반형 효소는 서로 다른 큰 촉매 서브유닛과 공통된 작은 조절 서브유닛으로 구성된 이합체 형태입니다.
이 유전자는 일반형 효소의 큰 서브유닛을 암호화하며, 두 가지 서로 다른 아이소폼을 생성하는 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
