Its active site residues are located on the cytosolic side of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane.
A chromosomal rearrangement involving this gene is associated with follicular lymphoma (type II chronic lymphatic leukemia).
Mutation of a conserved residue in the bovine ortholog can cause spinal muscular atrophy.
