Target Information
GFM2 is involved in mitochondrial translation, essential for maintaining mitochondrial function. Mutations in this system can disrupt the respiratory chain–oxidative phosphorylation process and impair mitochondrial DNA maintenance.
Eukaryotic cells have two translation systems—cytoplasmic and mitochondrial. The GFM2 gene encodes one of the mitochondrial translation elongation factors. Its precise role in regulating mitochondrial function and its involvement in diseases linked to mitochondrial dysfunction remain under study.
Alternative splicing results in at least three transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
