Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of evolutionarily conserved polymorphic alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends, essential for processes such as mitosis, meiosis, cell shape maintenance, and intracellular transport.
Microtubules also facilitate cell movement via flagella and cilia. In mammalian cells, their minus ends are anchored at microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). Tubulin heterodimers associate through GTP to form microtubules, and their polymerization is reversible, exhibiting dynamic instability.
Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized into microtubules, encoded by multiple tubulin genes forming several classes (six in humans).
