Smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SM-MHC) is a cytoplasmic structural protein and a major component of the contractile apparatus in smooth muscle cells. Its expression is developmentally regulated, appearing early in smooth muscle formation and specific to smooth muscle development. Two isoforms have been identified: MHC-1 and MHC-2.
