Target Information
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease. Approximately 1% of individuals over 65 and 3% over 75 are affected. Mutations in the Park2 gene are a major cause of Parkinson’s disease and may be involved in the ubiquitin-mediated proteolytic pathway. These mutations can lead to autosomal recessive juvenile parkinsonism. Alternative splicing of this gene produces three products of undetermined function. Panneuronal expression of Parkin substrate Pael-R causes age-dependent selective degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in Drosophila; coexpression of Parkin degrades Pael-R and suppresses its toxicity.
