Target Information
LFG (Lifeguard) is a seven-transmembrane protein belonging to a family that inhibits apoptotic cell death induced by the Fas receptor. It is the human homolog of rat NMP35 and contains a conserved transmembrane domain and a small cytoplasmic domain. LFG protects cells from Fas-mediated neuronal apoptosis by binding to the Fas receptor without affecting Fas expression or FADD binding. It does not protect against TNF-alpha–mediated cell death. LFG is ubiquitously expressed, with higher expression in the hippocampus and other neural tissues, suggesting a neuroprotective role in neurodegenerative diseases.
