Target Information
PBGD (porphobilinogen deaminase), also known as hydroxymethylbilane synthase (HMBS), is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in the heme biosynthesis pathway. Deficiency of PBGD results in acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), an inherited disorder characterized by neurological dysfunction, hypertension, tachycardia, peripheral neuropathy, abdominal pain, and increased levels of aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen in urine.
