Target Information
This gene belongs to the protocadherin alpha gene cluster, one of three related clusters on chromosome 5. These clusters exhibit a genomic organization similar to B-cell and T-cell receptor gene clusters.
The alpha cluster comprises 15 cadherin superfamily genes (13 highly similar and 2 distantly related).
Each gene contains N-terminal variable exons encoding six cadherin ectodomains and shared C-terminal constant exons encoding the cytoplasmic domain.
These neural cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins are integral plasma membrane proteins, likely playing a crucial role in establishing and maintaining specific neuronal connections in the brain.
Alternative splicing has been reported, though full-length variants remain to be fully characterized.
