Background
S100 calcium binding protein A8 (S100A8) is a member of the S100 family containing two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. These proteins are localized in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus and regulate various cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. The S100 gene cluster resides on chromosome 1q21. S100A8 may inhibit casein kinase and act as a cytokine. Altered expression is associated with cystic fibrosis. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms exist (RefSeq, Jan 2016).
