Background
This gene encodes the highly polymorphic major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related protein A. Unlike canonical class I molecules, it does not associate with beta-2-microglobulin. It serves as a ligand for the NKG2-D receptor and functions as a stress-induced antigen recognized by intestinal epithelial γδ T cells. Variations in this gene are associated with susceptibility to psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. MICA-related antibody shedding is implicated in the progression from monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance to multiple myeloma. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
