Catalytic activity: L-cysteine + O₂ → 3-sulfinoalanine
Cofactor: Binds 1 iron ion per subunit; zinc to a lesser extent
Function: Initiates metabolic pathways related to pyruvate and sulfur compounds including sulfate, hypotaurine, and taurine. Regulates cellular cysteine concentration and maintains hepatic intracellular free cysteine levels.
Induction: Down-regulated by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate in HepG2 cells.
Pathway: Organosulfur biosynthesis; taurine biosynthesis; hypotaurine from L-cysteine (step 1/2).
PTM: Thioether cross-link between Cys-93 and Tyr-157 stabilizes Fe²⁺ ion and prevents formation of free hydroxyl radicals.
Similarity: Member of the cysteine dioxygenase family.

Tissue specificity: Highly expressed in liver and placenta; low expression in heart, brain, and pancreas; detected in HepG2 cells.
