Background
This gene encodes a member of the vasopressin/oxytocin family and a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed to generate multiple protein products. These include the neuropeptide hormone arginine vasopressin, neurophysin 2, and copeptin. Arginine vasopressin is synthesized in the hypothalamus and transported to the posterior pituitary where it is stored or secreted into the bloodstream. It acts as a growth factor by enhancing pH regulation through acid-base transport systems and exerts a direct antidiuretic action on the kidney.
