Target Information
TPMT (Thiopurine S-methyltransferase) catalyzes the S-methylation of thiopurine drugs such as 6-mercaptopurine. Defects in TPMT cause thiopurine S-methyltransferase deficiency, leading to toxicity risks in patients with low TPMT activity. TPMT plays a crucial role in the metabolism and inactivation of thiopurine drugs, commonly used as immunosuppressants or cytotoxic agents for conditions like leukemia, autoimmune diseases, and organ transplantation. Genetic variations at the TPMT locus largely determine inter-individual drug response.
