Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which mammalian mitoribosomes lack. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL3 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the L3P ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 13q.
