Target Information
Nitric oxide (NO) is an inorganic, gaseous free radical that acts as a signaling molecule between cells. It mediates vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity through cellular responses. NO production is regulated by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) family, which catalyzes the oxidation of L-arginine to produce L-citrulline and NO.
Three isoforms have been cloned:
- nNOS (type I): neuronal NOS
- eNOS (type III): endothelial cell NOS
- iNOS (type II): inducible NOS
All NOS isoforms contain calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN binding domains.
