Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a placental hormone that stimulates secretion of the pregnancy-sustaining steroid progesterone.
hCG belongs to a family of glycoprotein hormones that includes lutropin (luteinizing hormone; LH), follitropin (follicle-stimulating hormone; FSH), and thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone; TSH).
These hormones are disulfide-rich heterodimers composed of two distinct subunits, alpha and beta. The alpha subunit is common among family members within a species, while the beta subunit is unique to each hormone and confers receptor and biological specificity.
