Target Information

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by adding the telomere repeat sequence TTAGGG. The enzyme consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity, encoded by the TERT gene, and an RNA component serving as a template for telomere repeat synthesis. Telomerase expression is typically repressed in postnatal somatic cells, leading to progressive telomere shortening and cellular senescence. Dysregulation of telomerase expression may contribute to oncogenesis. Studies in mice suggest telomerase also participates in chromosomal repair, as de novo synthesis of telomere repeats may occur at double-stranded breaks. Multiple alternatively spliced variants of TERT have been identified, though not all full-length sequences are known. Alternative splicing at this locus is thought to regulate telomerase activity.
