The protein encoded by this gene shows weak homology to several carbohydrate kinases, which are involved in phosphorylation of sugars as they enter a cell, preventing their return across the membrane. Sequence variation between this novel gene and known carbohydrate kinases indicates possible differences in substrate specificity, cofactors, or kinetic properties. The gene is located in a region commonly deleted in cystinosis patients, suggesting a potential role as a modifier of the cystinosis phenotype. This genomic region is rich in Alu repetitive sequences, which are often associated with chromosomal rearrangements.
