Target Information
Glucagon is a 29-residue polypeptide hormone (MW 3482) produced in the pancreas. A related hormone, enteroglucagon (or oxyntomodulin), produced in the intestinal mucosa, extends the glucagon sequence by 8 additional residues at the C-terminus.
Pancreatic glucagon promotes glycogenolysis, lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, and ketogenesis, counteracting insulin activity and increasing blood glucose levels.
Immunocytochemical studies show glucagon localized in A (alpha) cells, comprising 15–20% of pancreatic islet cells, typically at the periphery.
Pathological glucagon peptide residues are mainly associated with tumors (glucagonomas), as no glucagon-cell deficiency or hyperplasia states are known.
Glucagon-specific antibodies are useful as cell and tumor markers in immunohistochemistry and as analytical tools for hormone quantification.
