Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein from the ribosomal protein S18P family, one of three with sequence similarity to bacterial S18 proteins. The human mitochondrial S18 proteins are not closely related to each other nor to prokaryotic S18 proteins. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 8p, 12p, 15q, and 22q.
