Target Information

Cytokine that plays a crucial role in innate immunity of the epithelium, particularly against intestinal bacterial pathogens, acting in an autocrine manner. It stimulates the production of antibacterial peptides and proinflammatory molecules through NF-kappa-B and MAPK pathways. IL17C acts synergistically with IL22 to induce antibacterial peptides such as S100A8, S100A9, REG3A, and REG3G, and with TNF and IL1B to induce DEFB2 from keratinocytes. Depending on the context, IL17C may have both protective and pathogenic roles, maintaining epithelial homeostasis or promoting inflammation. Enhanced IL17C/IL17RE signaling may increase susceptibility to autoimmune diseases.
