Target Information
Isocitrate dehydrogenases catalyze the oxidative decarboxylation of isocitrate to 2-oxoglutarate. These enzymes belong to two distinct subclasses, one utilizing NAD(+) and the other NADP(+).
Five isocitrate dehydrogenases have been reported: three NAD(+)-dependent enzymes localized to the mitochondrial matrix, and two NADP(+)-dependent enzymes — one mitochondrial and one cytosolic.
The NADP(+)-dependent cytosolic isozyme encoded by this gene is found in the cytoplasm and peroxisomes, containing a PTS-1 peroxisomal targeting signal.
It plays a role in regenerating NADPH for intraperoxisomal reductions and reactions consuming 2-oxoglutarate, such as alpha-hydroxylation of phytanic acid.
The cytoplasmic enzyme contributes significantly to cytoplasmic NADPH production.
