Eukaryotes produce three distinct classes of RNA polymerase: Pol I, Pol II, and Pol III.

Pol I transcribes rRNA genes for the precursors of 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNA molecules.
Pol II transcribes protein-coding genes into mRNA and snRNA genes into snRNAs that influence RNA processing.
Pol III transcribes 5S rRNA and all tRNA genes.

Each RNA polymerase complex consists of 9–15 different polypeptides. The RPB6 and RPB8 subunits are shared by all three RNA polymerases.
