Target Information
MRPL23 encodes a protein that is part of the 39S large subunit of mammalian mitochondrial ribosomes. These ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitoribosomes have a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio (approximately 75%) compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPL23 gene is located within an imprinted region on chromosome 11 but is expressed biallelically.
