Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) arising from single coding-exon genes.
They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for recognizing and transducing odorant signals via G proteins.
The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific.
