Target Information
The inhibitors of apoptosis (IAP) proteins prevent cell death both in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting distinct caspases.
The X-linked Inhibitor of Apoptosis (XIAP) is a key member of the IAP family. XIAP’s caspase-inhibiting activity is negatively regulated by XIAP-associated factor 1 (XAF1) and Smac/DIABLO.
XAF1 binds to XIAP and antagonizes its caspase inhibitory activity, triggering redistribution of XIAP from the cytosol to the nucleus.
XAF1 is ubiquitously expressed in normal tissues but often reduced or undetectable in many cancer cell lines.
