Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that protects cells against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), which is further converted to water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several SOD isoforms:
- SOD1 (Cu,Zn-SOD): Cytosolic enzyme found in all eukaryotes; homodimeric 32 kDa structure.
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme; tetrameric 80 kDa structure located in the mitochondrial matrix.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular enzyme; heparin-binding multimer expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone that delivers Cu to SOD1 for activation.
