Target Information
Mitochondrial complex I, located in the mitochondrial inner membrane, is the first and largest enzyme in the electron transport chain of oxidative phosphorylation. It oxidizes NADH produced in the Krebs cycle, using two electrons to reduce ubiquinone to ubiquinol, initiating electron transfer that ultimately reduces oxygen to water.
Complex I consists of over 40 subunits, and defects in these subunits can cause various myopathies and neuropathies.
NDUFS5 (NADH dehydrogenase [ubiquinone] iron-sulfur protein 5), also known as NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase 15 kDa subunit, is a 106 amino acid protein suggested not to be involved in catalysis. It is ubiquitously expressed in human tissues, with relatively higher levels in heart, skeletal muscle, liver, kidney, and fetal heart.
