Target Information
Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor protein is part of an E3 ubiquitin ligase complex that ubiquitinates the alpha subunit of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) for proteasome-mediated degradation.
Inactivation of VHL leads to VHL disease and sporadic kidney cancer.
The VHLL gene encodes a homolog lacking one of two key domains necessary for VHL function and may contribute to oxygen homeostasis and neovascularization during placenta development.
This intronless gene may represent a retrotransposed pseudogene of the VHL locus on chromosome 3.
It binds HIF alpha but fails to recruit the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, functioning as a dominant-negative VHL protein and protector of HIF alpha.
