Target Information
ZEB2, initially identified as Smad interacting-protein 1, is a DNA-binding transcriptional repressor located in the nucleus that interacts with activated SMADs. Similar to ZEB1, ZEB2 inhibits transcription of the E-cadherin gene and induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a genetic program controlling cell migration during embryonic development and wound healing. ZEB2 also protects cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis, potentially contributing to tumor progression. It is often observed in the cytoplasm in various cancer tissues, suggesting regulated localization. Mutations in this gene are associated with Hirschsprung disease/Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
