Target Information
Voltage-dependent calcium channels mediate the entry of calcium ions into excitable cells and participate in various calcium-dependent processes, including muscle contraction, hormone or neurotransmitter release, and gene expression. These channels are multisubunit complexes composed of alpha-1, beta, alpha-2/delta, and gamma subunits.
The alpha-1 subunit forms the pore and determines channel properties, while the auxiliary subunits regulate its activity. The alpha-1A subunit, encoded by this gene, is primarily expressed in neuronal tissue. Mutations in this gene are associated with neurological disorders such as familial hemiplegic migraine and episodic ataxia 2.
Additionally, polymorphic variations due to n-repeats have been observed, with certain expansions (from 4–16 to 21–28 repeats) linked to spinocerebellar ataxia 6.
