Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which mammalian mitoribosomes lack. The proteins of mitoribosomes vary significantly across species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPS11 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with high sequence similarity to ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 20, and multiple transcript variants exist, encoding different isoforms.
